The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey: SCUBA-2 observations of nearby galaxies

چکیده

We present 850$\mu$m observations of a sample 8 nearby spiral galaxies, made using the SCUBA-2 camera on James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey (NGLS). corrected our data for presence $^{12}$CO $J=3\to 2$ line in bandwidth NGLS HARP data, finding typical contribution $\sim 20$%. measured dust column densities, temperatures and opacity indices by fitting spectral energy distributions constructed from archival Herschel observations, used GALEX Spitzer to make maps surface density star formation ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$). Typically, comparing SCUBA-2-derived H$_2$ densities H_2}$) $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ gives shallow law within with values typically being sublinear Herschel-derived broadly linear. This difference is likely due effects atmospheric filtering data. Comparing mean H_2}$ galaxies returns steeper index, consistent both Kennicutt-Schmidt value 1.4 linearity. Our results show that detection good predictor formation. suggest emission traces gas regions which will form stars timescales 5-100$ Myr, comparable timescale traced while preferentially densest these regions, forms shorter timescales.

The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey IV. Velocity Dispersions in the Molecular Interstellar Medium in Spiral Galaxies

An analysis of large-area CO J=3-2 maps from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope for 12 nearby spiral galaxies reveals low velocity dispersions in the molecular component of the interstellar medium. The three lowest luminosity galaxies show a relatively flat velocity dispersion as a function of radius while the remaining nine galaxies show a central peak with a radial fall-off within 0.2 − 0.4r25...

Interferometric observations of nearby galaxies

This contribution presents a short overview about the investigation of the molecular gas content of nearby galaxies using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer. I try to give a rather complete list of recent references, and explicit descriptions are given for objects under study at RAI Bonn. They comprise very different types of galaxies such as Haro 2, Mrk 297, M82, NGC2146, M31 and NGC4258. All ...

The JCMT Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey V : The CO ( J = 3 - 2 ) Distribution and Molecular Outflow in NGC 4631

We have made the first map of CO(J=3-2) emission covering the disk of the edge-on galaxy, NGC 4631, which is known for its spectacular gaseous halo. The strongest emission, which we model with a Gaussian ring, occurs within a radius of 5 kpc. Weaker disk emission is detected out to radii of 12 kpc, the most extensive molecular component yet seen in this galaxy. From comparisons with infrared da...

The NICMOS snapshot survey of nearby galaxies

We present “snapshot” observations with the NearInfrared Camera and MultiObject Spectrometer (NICMOS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of 94 nearby galaxies from the Revised Shapley Ames Catalog. Images with 0.2 resolution were obtained in two filters, a broad-band continuum filter (F160W, roughly equivalent to the H-band) and a narrow band filter centered on the Paα line (F187N or F19...

COJ = 2 → 1 observations of the nearby galaxies Dwingeloo

We present an exploratory survey of the central regions of the nearby spiral galaxies Dwingeloo 1 and Dwingeloo 2 made in the CO J = 2→1 line at 230 GHz using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. In Dwingeloo 1, which is probably the nearest grand-design barred spiral, the CO emission was sampled along a cross with its major axis aligned with the bar. The CO emission is an order of magnitude weak...
